Have a focal point.When designing a room, you would want to have a theme that will pull the individual pieces together without turning the space into an overcrowded theme park. To do this, it is important to create a focal point (such as a perfectly-situated window, a dramatic piece of furniture, or anything that strikes your fancy) and arrange the rest of your furniture around it. A good rule of thumb is to place the largest upholstered piece opposite your chosen focal point to create balance.
