Use furnishings to highlight the focal point. Bear in mind that accessories are meant to bring attention to your room’s focal point and to create balance. As such, the furnishings should be minimal to prevent overcrowding and to prevent the accessories from drowning out the focal point. Do make sure that the furnishings blend with the room’s color scheme and the focal point’s theme and motif.
Aside from being functional, your furniture plays an important role in supporting your theme. Some pieces may function well but their style or color may stick out like a sore thumb. Try to salvage it with slipcovers, tablecloths or paint. If it's a lost cause, remove it from the room.
