In terms of colour schemes, the 60-30-10 rule of interior design prescribes that 60 percent of the total colour of the unit should be from the unit itself (i.e. the walls, ceiling, and floor), 30 percent should be from the pieces of furniture, and the remaining 10 percent should be from the accent pieces. This allows for a dynamic but balanced look. In applying the 60-30-10 rule, make sure that the colours you choose are complementary to create a cohesive interior design.
Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly symmetrical. If you are going for a homey and comfortable look, it is best to keep the furnishings a tad asymmetrical. To maintain balance in your interior design, stick with a particular theme or color combination. If you’re unsure as to placement, here’s a handy tip: tall items should be placed in the back and shorter ones should be placed in front. For large or heavy items, it is best to keep them at the bottom, with smaller ones on top of them for highlight.
